Concurrent engineering is a work methodology based on the parallelization of tasks (i.e. performing tasks concurrently). It refers to an approach used in product development in which functions of design engineering, manufacturing engineering and other functions are integrated to reduce the elapsed time required to bring a new product to the market.

The engineering design process is a multi-step process including the research, conceptualization, feasibility assessment, establishing design requirements, preliminary design, detailed design, production planning and tool design, and finally production.
Basically there are seven phases of ED as follows:
Phase 1: Conceptual Design
Phase 2: Embodiment Design
Phase 3: Detail Design
Phase 4: Planning for Manufacture
Phase 5: Planning for Distribution
Phase 6: Planning for Use
Phase 7: Planning for Product Retirements
